This is my choice. I love being a mom.
I have been to school. I have worked a “Career”.
I have worked while being a mom. (TWO JOBS AT THE SAME TIME- SHOCKER! MOMS DO THIS ALL THE TIME!!!!!!)
And it is a good thing that I am home, not doing a job, because I had to crack open the sewing machine and whip up a set of scrubs for my five year old, because my daughter was afraid to dress as a mom for school, so she went as a veterinarian. At my children’s school, they have Spirit days several times throughout the year. Hat day, Crazy hair day, Blue Jays day etc. This particular spirit day was “Dress like your favorite Job” Day.
My daughter had been planning this since the calendar had come home the week before. She was going to be a MOTHER. I thought that was super cute. I told her she could put a doll into a baby carrier and carry a coffee and wear Yoga pants. Funny right? She was FIVE.
Well, the night before the big day, after picking my kids up from school, driving to the grocery store, and home to make dinner, my daughter told me that her teacher told her she is not allowed to dress like a Mom tomorrow, because “That's not a real job”...... Yup, She was told that being a MOM is NOT A REAL JOB!!!!!
As far as I remember, we live in Canada, where we can be anything we want to be. And having had the job of MOTHER, I can tell you that it is in fact, a REAL JOB. In fact, it is a damn HARD job. I realize that it is not a paying job. Perhaps it’s not a CAREER. But the calendar that came home with my Kindergarden last week, says DRESS LIKE YOUR FAVORITE JOB. It doesn't say CAREER day.
Five year olds watch their parents. They role play. They do as they see. I felt very honored, that my daughter wanted to be like me. She could have decided to be an Engineer like her dad, or a Teacher or Nurse like her Grandparents. She could have decided to be a Skating coach, or a Doctor, a Cashier, a Cook. But she picked being a MOM. And now she has been told, by her teacher who she respects, that HER MOM, who doesn't have a job outside of the home, doesn’t have a job.
I work hard. 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. I am woken at all hours of the night. I cook. Clean. Drive. Schedule. Prepare. Teach. Organize. Communicate. Coach. Repair. Make. Some tasks I have time to plan for, some are sprung on me last minute. I have three clients who are demanding, and all very different. They have emotions and desires and dislikes and fears and wants. They need guidance and encouragement and understanding. I work evenings, weekends and holidays. There are no sick days, no holidays, no personal days.
